Jewellery and watches

Metal, sizing, water resistance and hallmarks, read from the specification rather than the macro photo.

Guide updated 14 October 2026

Jewellery photos are enlarged and lit to flatter. The useful facts are the metal, the plating thickness if it is plated, the stone treatment if one is stated, and the length or diameter in millimetres. A “gold” title can mean gold plated, gold filled or solid gold, and those are different purchases.

Watches need a water-resistance figure you understand, a strap width you can replace, and a movement type that is actually written down. Quartz, mechanical and smart watches are different things to own, even when the case looks similar.

Jewellery

Jewellery listings should separate the metal, the plating and the stone treatment. A photo of a gold colour is not a hallmark. If the piece is plated, the listing ought to say what sits underneath and how thick that plate is claimed to be.

Check the length, the fastening and whether a sizing service is offered. Earrings and piercings have hygiene limits on returns, so read that offer before you buy a pair you cannot send back.

  • Metal or plating named in the specification.
  • Length, diameter or ring size, with the unit.
  • Hallmark or stone treatment if the listing claims one.

Watches

A watch page should say the movement, the case size and the water resistance in a unit you can check. A lifestyle photo of a swimmer does not prove a rating.

Straps and batteries are the usual surprises. See whether a spare link, a tool or a battery is included, and whether the guarantee is with a UK seller or only with the marketplace offer.

  • Case size and strap width.
  • Water-resistance figure, if one is printed.
  • Battery, movement and what the guarantee actually covers.

What to check

  • Metal or plating named precisely, and any UK hallmark if the listing claims solid precious metal.
  • Inner circumference, chain length, case diameter and strap width in millimetres.
  • Clasp type and whether spare links or a resizing service are mentioned.
  • Water resistance as a stated rating, not as a photo near a pool.
  • Movement, battery replacement and who honours the warranty.

Easy mistakes

  • Plated pieces described with the word gold and no plating detail.
  • One size rings with no millimetre diameter.
  • Water resistance that excludes showers, even though the number looks high.

Questions before you buy

  • Is it solid metal, or a coating on another metal?
  • Can a high-street jeweller resize it, or will that destroy the finish?
  • What does the water rating forbid?
