Craft kits are contents lists. Count the sheets, skeins, paint pots or beads, and compare that with the finished object in the photo. The finished item is often made with extra materials or shown larger than the kit produces.
Also check age warnings, blade or heat tools, and whether a sewing machine, printer or adult help is assumed. Refill sizes matter if you want to continue after the starter pack runs out.
Hobbies
Hobby kits should list the pieces, the tools that are not included, and the skill or age the brand printed. A finished example in the photo can include paint or parts from another set.
Check the scale, the material and whether batteries or a pattern download are required. If the listing is a refill, make sure you already own the tool it fits.
- Piece count against the finished photo.
- Tools, paint or batteries included or not.
- Scale, size or age mark printed on the listing.
What to check
- Piece, sheet or volume count in the specification.
- Tools included versus tools you must already own.
- Age or skill guidance and any sharp, hot or chemical warning.
- Paper, fabric or filament size if it has to match a machine you own.
- Refills, and whether the colours in the photo are the colours in the pack.
Easy mistakes
- A finished project photographed with extra decorations.
- Paint or ink sets that are sample sizes.
- Machines that need a computer, slicer or app the listing barely mentions.
Questions before you buy
- How many of each material are in the box?
- What tool do you need that is not included?
- Can you buy the same refill later?
