Grocery

Food and household groceries checked for pack size, diet labels and the date you can live with.

Guide updated 14 October 2026

Grocery listings hide the decision in the pack size. A box, a pouch and a multipack of the same name can be very different weights. Compare the grams or millilitres, and check whether a dietary word in the title is also in the ingredients.

Dates matter more than a star rating. Look for the use-by or best-before information the listing is willing to state, the storage temperature, and whether a multipack is a flavour mix you did not want. If you have an allergy, use the ingredients list rather than the front-of-pack claim.

Everyday essentials

Household staples are easy to mix up when a listing is a multipack, a refill or a single unit. Read the count and the unit size before you compare two pictures of the same bottle.

Food, cleaning and personal-care returns are often limited once a seal is open. Check the date style the seller shows, and do not treat a pantry photo as a promise of what is in date.

  • Unit count and size, including refills.
  • Flavour, scent or variant in the title.
  • The return limit for food and sealed goods.

What to check

  • Net weight or volume, and the number of units in a multipack.
  • Ingredients and allergens, read in full if you avoid something specific.
  • Storage: ambient, chilled or frozen, and what the listing says about dates.
  • Dietary words such as vegetarian or gluten free only when they appear on that product.
  • The seller, because food returns are often limited once a pack is opened.

Easy mistakes

  • A large photo of one biscuit when the pack is a variety you dislike.
  • Imported labelling that uses a different name for an allergen.
  • Subscribe-style quantities you did not mean to start.

Questions before you buy

  • What is the weight of one unit, not the whole shipping box?
  • Does the ingredients list match the diet you need?
  • How soon do you need to use it once it arrives?
