A book page can sell the hardcover, the paperback, a workbook, an older edition and a used copy side by side. The useful checks are the publication date, the edition, the language, and whether the copy is new or used. Page count is a poor guide on its own because type size changes it.
Study books and manuals go out of date. If you need a specific syllabus year, match the edition and year in the title to the one you were asked for. For fiction, decide whether you care about the cover, the size or a particular translation.
What to check
- Format: hardcover, paperback, mass market or digital.
- Publication date, edition and language.
- New or used, and the used condition note if there is one.
- Whether it is the main book or a summary, workbook or unofficial guide.
- Region, if a textbook differs between UK and US editions.
Easy mistakes
- A study guide wearing the name of the textbook.
- An old edition pictured with a newer cover.
- A set listed as one volume.
Questions before you buy
- Which year and edition does the specification list?
- Is the copy new?
- Do you need the UK edition specifically?
