Home and kitchen

Cookware, small appliances and everyday home kit, judged by size, spare parts and how they are cleaned.

Guide updated 14 October 2026

Kitchen kit fails in ordinary ways: it does not fit the cupboard, the jug is not dishwasher-safe, or the replacement seal is nowhere to be found. Measure the space you have, including the swing of a door and the height under a shelf, before you compare wattage or colour.

Materials matter more than a lifestyle photo. Stainless steel, non-stick coatings, glass and plastic have different heat limits and washing rules. If a coating is the reason you are buying, find the coating name and whether the brand sells a replacement part.

Appliances

Large and small appliances need a model code, a UK plug and a stated wattage. The colour of a kettle does not tell you the capacity or whether the jug is dishwasher-safe.

Measure the space, including hoses, doors and ventilation. A listing that shows a kitchen scene is not a measurement. Spare filters and seals should be named if the machine needs them.

  • External size against the cupboard, worktop or alcove.
  • UK plug and wattage.
  • Which parts are included, and which are sold as extras.

What to check

  • External dimensions against the real cupboard, worktop or drawer.
  • UK plug and wattage, and whether a high-wattage appliance needs a sensible circuit for your kitchen.
  • Which pieces are dishwasher-safe, and which must be washed by hand.
  • Spare lids, filters, seals or jugs, and whether they are sold separately.
  • Care limits: oven temperature, induction compatibility, or blades that must stay dry.

Easy mistakes

  • Sets that look complete in a photo but list fewer pieces in the bullets.
  • Non-stick claims with no explanation of what happens once the coating wears.
  • Imported appliances with a manual that never mentions UK fittings.

Questions before you buy

  • Where will it live when it is not in use?
  • What breaks first, and can you buy that part on its own?
  • Does the size include handles and lids, or only the pot?
